Question about uploading videos...?

I have no problems uploading videos to youtube.





But, I would like to know why a 2-3 minute video is 80-90 MB's? I have seen people with videos up to 9-10 minutes long, and mine are short videos. I have been splitting the videos in parts 1 and 2. I have no clue as to how to compress videos. I have seen this done, but need someone to explain it to me step by step. I am pretty much computer illiterate when it comes to that stuff.
